Format Rules:
  • This is an open martial arts tournament.  All styles are welcome. Competition consists of form (pattern), sparring and weapons form.
  • Competitors are placed in age and belt divisions. Also, competitors are divided by gender.  The Tournament Director may add or split divisions and/or move competitors up or down in divisions according to physical size, rank, or gender as necessary to allow for safe competition.
  • A competitor’s age is determined by their age on July 1.
  • PATTERN - Scoring for pattern (form) will be based on balance, timing, power and technique. Color belts are given one chance to start over with a one  point deduction. Black belts may not start over. Patterns must be traditional - no music or freestyle patterns are allowed.
  • SPARRING - Competitors spar for one 2 minute match. The match is stopped to award points. No face contact but head contact is allowed with both hand and foot.  Two point kicks and one point hand techniques.  Competitor safety is priority. The following are not allowed: No face contact, kicking or punching below the belt, to the kidneys, back; sweeping, grabbing or throwing. Points are called as they occur.  Judges will break for points.  The first competitor to five points or the competitor with the most points at the end of the two-minute match will advance to the next round. Ties are decided by a “Sudden Victory” point.  The first competitor to score a point will be declared the winner.
  • The following safety gear is MANDATORY for ALL sparring competitors: Headgear, mouthpiece, hand gear (foam), groin cup (males), and safety boots (the heel and complete top of the foot and toes must be covered). Chest protectors may be worn but are optional.  Face-shields may be worn but are also optional.
